BY GRACE CABELL Schools within the Burnside cluster are looking at new ways to introduce modern technology into their curriculum. Last week, members of the Burnside Learning Community held their first unconference at Cobham Intermediate School. Educators were able to participate in and lead professional development seminars. The schools which took part included Burnside Primary School,
St Patrick’s School, Cobham Intermediate School, St Andrew’s College, Fendalton Open Air School, Christ the King Catholic School, Lollipops Educare, Waimairi School and Allenvale Primary School. Participants were able to design or opt in to various sessions, such as using Google Docs in schools and blogging in the classroom. Fendalton Open Air School principal Paul Sibson said the conference was built by teachers and pupils choosing their own topics they wanted to know more
about, and then presenting these to other members in the cluster. “The day went extremely well. The principals have had a debrief and the feedback was really positive. Lots of new connections have been made,” said Mr Sibson. Presentations made by pupils at the seminars all used new technology methods. An interactive session with year 5 and 6 students from Fendalton Open Air School showed what Google and iPad apps they found useful.

A pilot programme to encourage seniors into cycling has been so successful it may run again later this year. Earlier this month 18 Christchurch graduates between 62 and 90 completed the first PEDAL programme in New Zealand, hosted by Bishopdale YMCA. The PEDAL Programme, which stands for pedalling and education for arthritis of the lower limb, is based on the chain programme, the brainchild of Robert Middleton, a UK-based orthopaedic surgeon. The Christchurch project ran from August 4 and finished on September 22. Arthritis New Zealand and Sport Canterbury are now working through the outcomes in hopes of gaining funding to run the programme again. One participant said the classes had been cheerful and informative. “Staff were wonderful dealing with us older puffing cyclists. Congratulations on introducing the PEDAL classes and meeting a need of older people,” the participant said. Sport Canterbury’s physical activity manager, Jess Wood, said one participant has now purchased an exercycle, and another has taken up road cycling.

Volunteers boost patrol BY GRACE CABELL
After a recent spike in daytime burglaries, residents from all over Christchurch are volunteering for the Riccarton Community Watch. During the spike last month, cuts had to be made to patrol times as there were not enough volunteers available to fill the roles. After an article was published in the Nor’West News on September 22, Riccarton Community Watch co-ordinator Geoff Parfitt said the patrol has had 10 residents put in applications. The increased interest in new
members would bring the volunteer numbers up from 25 to 35. Mr Parfitt said this would be the most members the patrol has ever had. He said the patrol had applications come from as far as Burnside, Bryndwr and the Port Hills area. “Most burglaries happen in the day between 10am and 4pm so having more members would mean we can increase our shift times,” Mr Parfitt said. If all applications were accepted, he said the group would be able to run five days a week, with both morning and afternoon patrols.
Mr Parfitt said even driving around the area doing three 10 minute stops would help out, as more people noticed them when they stopped. “We’re not policemen, we are concerned citizens who care for our residents,” he said. Mr Parfitt said although he cannot precisely measure the patrol’s success rate, the Riccarton Neighbourhood Policing Team has said it was very helpful. “We asked them how can we gage our effectiveness. They said take us off the road for three months and watch the burglaries grow.”
Riccarton Community Constable Ken Carter said the spike does not seem to be continuing and the number of burglaries has dropped since. “They’re definitely one of the more proactive community watches,” said Constable Carter. He said having the community watch out there makes any person who wants to commit a crime think twice. Anyone interested in joining the patrol should email Mr Parfitt at riccomwatch@netaccess.co.nz, or phone Westfield Riccarton on 983 4500.
LETTING GO: The Avon River was filled with fresh life as pupils from St Margaret’s College released baby salmon at the Carlton Mill Bridge. As part of a Fish and Game New Zealand initiative, the girls were given 200 salmon eggs to raise as part of an initiative to improve the stock of salmon in Canterbury rivers. St Margaret’s College teacher Paulette Double said the students learnt much about the life cycle of the salmon and were amazed to observe a conjoined salmon with two heads and two tails.

NEW GENERATION: Young tech wizards from Fendalton Open Air School show the teachers how it is done.
Call for technology •From page 1 Mr Sibson said teachers in the cluster were impressed by the eight Fendalton school pupils and their technology-based presentations. He said helping pupils understand how to use technology productively was pivotal to modern learning. “We need to learn ways to use those tools and build them into the programme to enhance learning, not to let it take over,” he said. Some teachers have started up educational blogs based on what they learnt in the sessions.

Time is right &
McMaster Heap Veterinary practice
AN EMERGENCY FOR LEWIS
BY SARA HODGSON
Lewis, a gorgeous 6 year old male ginger
domestic long haired cat initially presented to our veterinary clinic with the complaint of straining in his litter tray and licking excessively around his bottom area. This clinical sign is always a major concern to any vet. It could be a life threatening blockage of the urethra leading to the physical inability to urinate and therefore a very full hard painful bladder, which can quickly be fatal leading to electrolyte imbalances and a heart attack. Most owners who witness this behaviour are usually not very worried and think that their cat is constipated and just trying to pass faeces. Sometimes they think the veterinary visit can wait until after work or even the next day if they notice this behaviour at night, which might be too late for some cats! Ignoring a blocked cat not only has the potential to be life threatening but also complicates recovery if the bladder is stretched too large for too long. Luckily Lewis’ owner rushed him to McMaster & Heap in time and he was diagnosed with a urethral obstruction (blocked bladder). Blood work before surgery is advised to ensure his heart won’t be affected by any electrolyte imbalances and his kidneys haven’t been too damaged. Lewis was placed on intravenous fluid therapy and surgery was conducted under anaesthetic to unblock the obstruction by passing a urinary catheter into the bladder.
On X-ray Lewis was an unusual case as he had three stones present - two in his bladder and one stuck in his urethra stopping him from passing urine (x-ray picture). Most cats have a mucus or crystal plug blocking the passage therefore are easier to flush back into the bladder and manage with food and short term medication. Fortunately this stone was able to be flushed back into the bladder. The idea was to use veterinary prescription diets to dissolve these stones by creating a dilute urine and an optimal pH level of the urine. Usually stones these size will completely dissolve in 3-6 weeks. We always knew there was a chance of another obstruction but rather than going straight to surgery we tried prescription diet wet food and a plan to re-xray to check the progress in two weeks.
Lewis’ mum knew what signs to look out for and unfortunately 12 days later he re-blocked. We repeated the x-rays and discovered all three stones were stuck blocking the urethra (x-ray picture). They had been getting smaller but sadly were now stuck and needed to be flushed back into the bladder again under general anaesthetic. We decided now to take Lewis to surgery to remove the stones from his bladder. All three stones were successfully retrieved and sent off to America for analysis to confirm what they are made up of and therefore ensure he is maintained on the correct diet to prevent them forming again in future.
After leading Riccarton High School for 19 years, principal Phil Holstein is moving across to Burnside High School as the principal in 2015. Reporter Grace Cabell caught up with him ahead of the big move. I understand you have just come back from a few days break after the big news, how was it? Yes, I’ve just spent three days away in the country with two good friends of mine, it was brilliant. So tell me a bit about yourself, are you Christchurch born and bred? Yes I am. I have always lived in the eastern suburbs in Shirley. I grew up there, went to Shirley Intermediate School, Shirley Boys’ High, and then Canterbury University. My first school I worked in was Hillmorton High School. I spent 13 years there and then two years travelling around when I was first married. How did you get into your education role in the first place? I began getting into it from university. I did a Bachelor of Science in geography and economics. I loved working with young people. I always wanted to be a physical education teacher but then I realised that it was geography and social sciences that I liked. And I loved sports coaching, so I was able to do both as a teacher. So you’ve been at Riccarton for 19 years now – how do you feel about leaving? There’s a range of emotions. Even through the whole process of applying for Burnside I was reflecting back over the sadness of 19 years, a bit of grief if you know what I
mean. I love the school so much, it’s been a part of me . . . I call it my second family. It got a bit overwhelming at the end of last week so I’ve just returned back from a small break with friends and that was just what I wanted. I’ve spoken to the staff at Burnside and have spoken to say I want to spend my time there well. But I’m here at Riccarton at the moment so life is normal for now. What propelled you to move, what was it that appealed? For me it was 19 years, you know. And also my age I suppose. I always believed I tried to impress on our staff and students to take on new challenges and here I was, thinking I should challenge myself a little bit to see if I could apply for a new position. The timing came with a school I’ve always been interested in, so there it was. What do you think you’ll miss the most about Riccarton? I don’t think there is any one thing. It’s all encompassing. Obviously the students, I learnt so much and they inspire me every day, also the wonderful staff and the culture from our school. What are you looking forward to the most?
Lewis had not been eating much at all prior to the surgery. So at the time of surgery it was decided to place a feeding tube (photo). This is a fairly easy procedure and a small soft tube was inserted straight into his oesophagus from the outside of his neck. This allows us to give him all the nutrition he needs, as well as multiple medications over the next week or two allowing him the best chance at a full recovery. He remained in the clinic for several days with his urinary catheter left in to help monitor his urine production and allow his bladder to remain completely empty to recover from the inflammation caused by the stones and surgery. After three days the urinary catheter was removed and he was able to urinate by himself. Lewis can now head home with a feeding plan for his feeding tube. Once he starts eating enough calories on his own, the tube is easily removed with him awake and will heal over by itself. He will remain on special urinary prescription diet to prevent any re-occurrence of the stones or crystal formation.

for a new challenge NEW CHAPTER: Riccarton High School principal Phil Holstein is saying goodbye to his second family, but is embracing his new role leading Burnside High School next year. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN Do you have children yourself? Yes we have one son, Matt. He is 24 and doing a Masters of applied psychology at Canterbury University. He loves his cricket, I love watching him when he does his cricket. You’re a big rugby fan I hear, have you come across any epic rugby talent during your time at schools? Well I was part of coaching the New Zealand senior schools rugby team for three years and in that period of time I’ve loved watching senior school rugby. A great number of players came through that, I’ve watched Andrew Mehrtens, Aaron Mauger and many of the players that
have come through to become All Blacks. What is something surprising you have learnt from your principal years? It’s not so much surprising but one thing I’ve learnt is that I can’t please everyone or make them happy. I do try but all I can do is provide an environment to allow people to be happy, particularly with staff. What has been one of the biggest challenges in your career? If you can imagine, Riccarton is an organisation of more than 1000 people. It’s a daily situation of regular life issues happening at a school, dealing with students, families, staff, health

issues and their own family issues, then impacting on that overall is the earthquake period of 2011. That was my next question. How did you find, as principal, the earthquakes impacted the school? I think that Riccarton has been fortunate but the impacts around the staff in practice are still there. I think that will still continue for some time. Is there anything else you would like to add? Yes. I’d like to make a mention to my wife Sue. She is my rock, and my critical friend and she is the guide behind everything I do. I’m very lucky. Thanks for your time Phil.

I’m excited and thrilled by this new opportunity. I have a mix of emotions, at the moment I’m still here, but I know 2015 is coming. My thinking is already there – I’m already thinking about my next move, my thinking has started in the background. I’m excited about already working in a larger school and the people there. I’ve worked with the acting principal Sylvia Sidaway before and I think we work well together. What’s in an average day for you as a principal? I lead a pretty boring life and it’s pretty sad . . . no, for me it’s an early start, if I can I try to go to the gym first. I’m aiming for at least three times a week but fail miserably on a regular basis. I often start with breakfast meetings before school – it’s a good time to do my thinking. At the other end of the day coming across from the east is hard. So you get here early and leave later, that’s the norm really for me. How do you cope with managing that many children? You enjoy working with the energy and enthusiasm of young people. And that excited you but it also tires you too. But at the same time it’s what keeps you young – that’s the good part. The downside comes when often they’re putting through the school through all the things that can happen out of school.

FAST FOLDERS: Pupils Riley Williams and Micah Faderagao won second and first place in the milk folding competition.
Cotswold pupils milk their folding skills BY GRACE CABELL ‘Drink it dry, fold it flat, send it back’, was the mantra laid out by the Fonterra Milk for Schools scheme for the school’s milk folding competition. Pupils at Cotswold School were eager to get involved and have been racing against their peers to win the title of fastest milk carton folder. Cotswold School joined in the folding competition, The Big Slurp, on September 24 to celebrate World School Milk Day. Pupils had to drink the milk and then fold the milk cartons a specific way for collection from special recyclers. Micah Faderagao, 11, won with a time of 6.32sec. Riley Williams, who turned nine last week, received an early birthday present by finishing second with a time of 8.13sec. “It’s good to have [milk] at
school and it is nice and cold. I’ve been practising at school as well as at home with different cartons to improve my time for this competition,” Riley said. Maia Jeffs, 8, said she liked the milk to drink, but enjoyed the folding more. “It’s very sweet and different from coconut milk, but I still like it,” he said. The flat cartons are sent to Thailand to be made into school books and roof tiles. The school enjoys free milk from Fonterra every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. About 85 per cent of Cotswold children participated in the free milk for schools programme which children and parents opted into. More than 65 million children in more than 60 countries receive milk in schools. In New Zealand about 170,000 Kiwi children drank milk as part of Fonterra Milk for Schools.
Bid to improve Sawyers Arms traffic flow BY GRACE CABELL
Traffic count data shows Sawyers Arms Rd experiences more traffic than most others around Christchurch. The data shows afternoon traffic peak in Christchurch would be expected to last for 1.5 hours to 2 hours. However, the traffic flow on the Sawyers Arms Rd and Main North Rd intersection remained constant between 1pm and 7pm, with between 476 and 555 vehicles arriving at this intersection each hour. In a move improve this, traffic engineer Bill Homewood presented the Shirley-Papanui Community Board with a proposal to include no stopping restrictions and lane alterations. Members of the board allowed staff to give advice on alternatives, such as a clearway and a timeline for completion of the Grassmere to Rutland St pathway and railway cycleway. Last Wednesday the board approved the proposal. Mr Homewood said restrictions were required to improve the operation of the intersection, which was functioning below its capacity.

The report said 80 per cent of vehicles at this intersection turned left, which could not be accommodated in the existing 40m left turn lane without vehicles queuing over the cycle lane and blocking the use of the right turn lane. A scheme based on a model of the Main North Rd corridor shows the estimated time saved would be between 5sec to 10sec per vehicle during peak hours. The scheme would remove five 30min parking spaces on the northern side of Sawyers Arms Rd and extend the twolane approach to the intersection by 48m, more than doubling its length. Although this scheme removed the parking provision on the northern side of Sawyers Arms Rd, there would continue to be parking directly outside the shops along the west side of Main North Rd and the southern side of Sawyers Arms Rd. Removing the parking spaces would also allow for the existing cycle lane to be realigned so that cyclists were not forced into the traffic lane by queuing vehicles.

The hunt is on for more than 200 volunteers to help ensure everything runs smoothly when the FIFA U-20 World Cup is in town next June. Christchurch will host nine matches during the tournament, including a quarter-final and a semi-final, over a two-week period. Between 250 and 300 local volunteers are needed during that time, and those interested are able to register online any time between now and October 17. Christchurch venue general manager Karin Osterberger said volunteering would offer people a chance to be part of the event. “To be part of the second largest men’s football tournament is an incredible opportunity and a great learning experience.” Volunteers will take on a wide range of roles, some of which include greeting guests, issuing accreditation, organising catering and other hospitality services, and assisting fans and media. Applicants get to specify the three roles they would most prefer, and while some require specific skills, training will be provided beforehand. Some applicants will be offered leadership roles. Ms Osterberger said the wide

Ms Osterberger said it would be a great showcase for the city. “(The tournament) is an incredible opportunity to put Christchurch back on the map and let the world know that we’re ready and open for business.” The local volunteers will be part of a nationwide team of more than 2000 working across the seven host cities. More than 10,000 international visitors are

expected during the tournament, with more than 25,000 tickets already sold. Current stars who have played in the U-20 World Cup, which takes place every two years, include Manchester United’s Angel Di Maria, Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez, Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas, and Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, among dozens of others, and this tournament promises to provide a first look at the stars of the future. Besides hosts New Zealand, seven other countries have already qualified: Fiji from Oceania, and Germany, Portugal, Austria, Hungary, Serbia and Ukraine from Europe. The qualifiers from Asia will be determined later this month, while those from North America, South America and Africa will be found early next year, before the draw for the tournament is made in early February.

Don’t leave the cooker unattended
BY MARK THOMAS - FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER
Once again kitchen fires featured this week with two incidents where major damage occurred. A fire in Eureka St, Aranui, last Sunday was the result unattended cooking. The house is a write-off. On the same day in Ilam Park Rd a gas cooker, outside on a deck, set fire to the wooden table it was sitting on.
Because the user wasn’t there a fire developed, entered the roof of the house and the result is a badly damaged home. In both cases the result could have been so much better if only the would-be cooks had stayed at their cookers. I know it’s cruel to be critical of people who are suffering loss but if one or five or a 100 people read this and take the advice onboard we might avert another similar incident in the future. We often get called to party bonfires two
or even three times in a night where partygoers re-light their fire after the brigade has left. This happened on Pacific Rd, North Beach, last Friday night. Every time we’re called to one of these totally unnecessary incidents one fire truck, that could be vital elsewhere, is taken out of the pool. The short message is – don’t. Another animal rescue, this time a horse in a ditch in Prestons Rd last Friday was attended by our wildlife branch, the St Albans crew. Well done once again.

Little dancers to step onto big stage Two young St Albans dancers are given the opportunity to be a part of Journey of the Celts, a production in the upcoming Body Festival. Sisters Tayla, 6, and Georgia Eagle, 9, will dance alongside some of New Zealand’s best highland dancers. Tayla has been dancing for three years and Georgia for more than four years, with both competing in a national circuit at many competitions each year. The girls both have learnt their dancing skills from Julie Hawke, who is also one of the directors for the concert Journey of the Celts. They will be part of the 70 young Canterbury highland dancers given the opportunity to perform alongside the country’s elite as part of the Highland Dance Company stage show in Christchurch tonight and tomorrow. The company features 18 of New Zealand’s best highland dancers, including past and present national champions. Award-winning business delivers Parkhouse Garden Supplies has just won the Large Format section of the Retail NZ Top Shop Awards, for Retail Excellence.
and daughter team are driving Parkhouse Garden Supplies into the future, and they certainly are leading the way amongst Landscape Supply Businesses, not just in Christchurch, but beyond.
and so much more. Noel says he has suppliers beating down the gates to get their products stocked at Parkhouse Garden Supplies, as the suppliers understand the leading edge Noel and his team have. Their signature product, Parkhouse Plus, is a fantastic all-purpose compost that’s gentle enough to plant directly into. You can use it for flowers, vegies, potting, anything. This product is used in many award winning gardens around Christchurch, including The Botanical Gardens and Mona Vale. Noel takes a lot of pride in this and reminds us that he uses absolutely no green waste in any of his products. And that’s another reason people continue to come back. Noel has many customers who have supported him from the start.
“We relocated our yard about 15 months ago, moving to a bigger, brighter, better premise which is highly visible from Curletts Road. We take a lot of pride in the presentation of our products and our yard, keeping everything clean and tidy and making the shopping experience a pleasurable one for our customers,” says Noel. “Nine times out of 10, a customer will be approached by our staff within a minute of driving in. The customers frequently comment about how well laid out our site is, how helpful the staff are, and how clean and tidy everything looks.”
“We’ve been so busy just recently, we’ve been trying to build three new bins for some exciting new products, we only have to put the blocks together, but between customers coming in, stock arriving and deliveries going out, it’s so far taken three weeks! Hopefully it will be done before everyone reading this comes in,” he jokes.
This is the second time in recent years they have won this award. This means they have been secret shopped three times and every time had outstanding reports back about their staff and business. The CEO of Retail NZ personally congratulated them, telling them they should be very proud, as they have taken on the Big Boys of the industry and come out on top! “We haven’t just thrown a few bins up and chucked some bark and stone in them and said ‘right, we’re in business’,” says Noel. “We’ve been living and breathing the business for almost 20 years, fine tuning it along the way to bring us to here and now, the Winners of Retail NZ Top Shop award, Large Format section 2014 (for the second time).” Parkhouse Garden Supplies, had humble beginnings. A small site located in front of the dump on Parkhouse Road, where it was a one to two man operation. In 1995 Noel purchased this little Gem and now in its third and permanent site on Landscape Lane, Noel has built it up slowly but surely into the Fantastic business it is today. Noel has worked day in day out to ensure the business runs smoothly and he always strives to exceed the expectations of his customers. Noel’s daughter Melissa joined her dad in the business a little over two years ago, and together this father

Spring gardening safety tips Take care when handling soils, potting mix and compost, here is some important information
As the trend towards ‘growing your own’ fruit and vegetables experiences a resurgence with Kiwi gardeners, it is timely to highlight some simple safety messages according to an industry expert. Nursery and Garden Industry Association of New Zealand, CEO, Dr John Liddle says: “Soil is rich with living organisms which are beneficial to plants and generally cause no harm to animals or people. Soil does, however, contain some organisms that are not beneficial such as a type of legionella bacteria, which is commonly found in the environment. In rare cases this can cause legionnaire’s disease.” “Gardening is a popular pastime enjoyed by thousands of New Zealanders. Apart from the obvious cost savings associated with growing your own, the positive psychological benefits can best be described as ‘food for the soul’, says Dr Liddle. SEVEN TIPS FOR SAFER GARDENING 1 Gently water your garden and potted plants to minimise airborne droplets and dust 2 Read the warning label on bagged composts and potting mixes before use 3 Wear gloves and a dust mask when handling soil including bagged
products 4 Open bagged products slowly using scissors and lean the bag away from your face 5 Gently dampen potting mixes before use 6 Make sure your working area for example shed or greenhouse, is well ventilated 7 Wash your hands when finished. Not all those who come into contact with the bacteria become sick and symptoms will vary from person to person. If people become infected with legionella, they may get flu-like symptoms that can range from mild to severe. However, it can be life-threatening to people who have health factors that increase their susceptibility. Those most at risk include smokers, the elderly and those with existing respiratory illnesses and weakened immune systems. “Following some simple safety precautions will greatly minimise the small risk that there is. If people want to find out more they should refer to the Ministry of Health’s Safer and Healthier Gardening pamphlet,” said Dr Liddle. NGINZ member retailers will be sent a legionnaire’s disease information pack with posters to be displayed in stores.
STAY SAFE: Wear gloves and a face mask when handling compost.

Meeting to discuss Kaiapoi waterways Kaiapoi waterways will feature in the Waimakariri Zone Committee meeting tonight. The zone committee will begin the meeting by offering members of the public the opportunity to contribute before going on to receive updates from its working groups and the Regional Committee. The committee will then receive several updates including Environment Canterbury’s Monitoring and Compliance Incident Response Guidelines document (2014), which sets out how it will respond to pollution incidents. Following this, the committee will be updated on the process to refresh its membership. Eight of Canterbury’s 10 water management zone committees are now calling for expressions of interest for new community members to ensure new perspectives will be represented on the committees. Next, the committee will review its Zone Implementation Programme for water management to make sure it is consistent with its future work programmes and priorities. It will also discuss how it can deliver on its key water management outcomes over the next five years to ensure a long-term and co-ordinated view is taken to planning. The committee will finish the meeting with a workshop to
review catchment profiles for the Waimakariri zone. The workshop will focus on advancing the outcomes and priorities from its previous planning workshops and build on the work done by its Nutrient Management and Water Efficiency working group to assist sub-regional catchment planning and priority setting. The zone includes the Ashley River catchment and shares the Waimakariri catchment below the gorge with the SelwynWaihora and Christchurch-West Melton zones. It includes Kaiapoi, Rangiora and Oxford. The committees meet in Rangiora for a regular monthly meeting to address local water management issues. Community members wanting to help deliver benefits from the water resource in the Waimakariri zone can visit www. ecan.govt.nz/canterbury water to see how to get involved. Applications close on October 20.

Bake sale gets attention from fundraisers BY GRACE CABELL The efforts of a bake sale run by the BelfastRedwood Anglican Parish have caught the eye of community fundraisers. After reading an article in the Nor’West News about a bake sale used to raise money for youth services, the Canterbury Community Trust invited the group to apply for funding. A spokeswoman for the trust said she noticed through the group’s efforts it had made in its Ultimate Baking Competition and Mega Bake Sale it could benefit from outside help. The bake sale, which had more than 84 entries, was used to support one-woman volunteer worker, Bex Chapman, who ran a youth support programme through the church. So far Miss Chapman has worked for free for six years, and has spent the last three years upskilling in order to cope with rising numbers. The parish hoped the funding would allow her to work for a full day. The trust spokeswoman said post earthquake there is still a huge need in the community to look after such groups. “Particularly in social services, four years down the track we are still seeing a lot of impact in that area. It’s not going away so were trying to keep things moving,” she said. The volunteer programme led by the parish grew from only four children to around 25 in a matter of years.
SWEET: Reverend Shirley Bennett receives first place in the confectionery section for her rocky road. Kidd’s Cakes & Bakery manager Chad Meehan delivers the award. Fundraising committee organiser Heather Sheridan said she is seeing more and more children in the Redwood area coming for help. “It has shown us there is a real need for this,” she said. Funding was previously supplied by the parish but there was only a limited amount. “There is only so much we can expect of them,” said Mrs Sheridan. “If we can pay for our youth worker and get her to collect further it will show itself.” The group is now waiting to hear back from its funding applications.

esearchers were amazed with the results of how beneficial natural nutrient Coenzyme-Q10 (CoQ10) is to the human body. CoQ10 is a natural enzyme in the body’s cells that is essential for cell function, energy and survival. The heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas require large amounts of CoQ10 to function well. In a recent multi country double blind trial on the possible benefits of CoQ10 to protect against heart failure, 420 patients with severe heart failure were given CoQ10 or a placebo and then followed for two years. It was found, to the amazement of the researchers, the patients who received the CoQ10 had a 50 per cent reduction in an adverse cardiovascular event or death compared to the placebo patients. Not only this, but the patients on CoQ10 had a 50 per cent reduction in death not only from cardiovascular events but from all causes. According to lead study author Professor Mortensen, this study is the first in over a decade to show a natural nutrient can reduce heart failure mortality and CoQ10 should be added as a standard treatment for anyone with cardiovascular complaints. It is known that CoQ10 levels decrease in the heart muscle of patients with heart failure as severity worsens. Statin drugs are used to treat many patients with cardiovascular problems but these drugs also reduce CoQ10 levels further in the body. Symptoms of low CoQ10 in the body can be low energy and endurance, muscle pain, poor memory, concentration and poor heart
function or heart failure. CoQ10 levels are known to decrease as we age and many researchers believe keeping our levels up of this vital nutrient may help prevent many chronic diseases including cancer. CoQ10 is available as a natural supplement to support good health. Further information is available from the Natural Health Advisers, Naturopath and Medical Herbalist at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, phone 388 5757. We are happy to help.

Researchers have found Saw Palmetto to inhibit the formation of Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and that DHT is the main reason for the prostate to enlarge. DHT has also been found to be a risk factor for prostate cancer and hair loss. Phellodendron amurense inner bark is another herb that has been found to protect against BPH, and recent research has shown it to be protective against prostate tumor development in laboratory studies. Lycopene is a potent antioxidant with numerous health benefits including cancer and BPH protective benefits. Fatty acids from the seeds of pumpkin, evening primrose and flax have been shown to be supportive of prostate and general good health. he prostate is a small walnutshaped male organ located beneath the urinary bladder and wrapped around the urethra or urinary tube. It is of little significance for most men until the late 40s, when for a large percentage of men it tends to enlarge and affect normal urination by restricting urinary flow through the urethra. This condition is known as Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia or BPH. BPH reduces the ability of the bladder to evacuate completely, causing common symptoms like wanting to urinate more frequently (especially annoying at night and as it affects sleep quality), difficulty starting urination, dribbling after urination and pain with urination. The word benign in BPH is very significant as it means an enlargement of the prostate that isn’t cancer. However, BPH should always be diagnosed by a MD as there is always the chance of prostate cancer. Once diagnosed as BPH, it can often be managed quite well with herbal amd nutritional remedies and without the side effects of prescription drugs used for this condition. MONEY
Money is your best Free horticultural training friend so treat it well A The key to having more money in your life is to love and respect the money you have already. Treat your money as if it is your best friend. If you respect your money, value it, and take care of it, you will attract more of it into your life. Having respect for your money means being responsible with it, keeping track of it, not wasting it or losing it unnecessarily and thinking about it in a positive way. Are you guilty of being disrespectful to yourself and to your money? Do you: • Spend more money on birthday and Christmas presents than you can afford to? • Spend more money on friends than you can afford to? • Often buy takeaway food or eat out because you can’t be bothered cooking? • Pay your bills late and therefore miss out on discounts or incur extra charges? • Buy on impulse rather than shopping around for lower prices on things that you need? • Often withdraw extra cash when you make an eftpos purchase? • Spend any money in your wallet just because it is there? People who respect their money are generally more aware of how much they have, how much they can afford to spend, and how to get the most value out of it. Here’s a test for you. Take out your wallet or purse. Before you open it, try and guess how much money is in there in notes and coins. Now see if you were right. Have a look at how your money is organised. Are

Artistic ENERGY By Larissa McMillan
W
hen a friend recommended Jonathan Milne’s book Go! The Art of Change to Anne Bannock, she looked into studying at The Learning Connexion - the school of art and creativity, based in Wellington which Jonathan founded and directs. She realised that its study-from-home part-time option suited her down to a tee. “My lifelong ambition was to go to an art school and to be part of the creative energy that goes with it, to enter a new world of understanding modern art and new ideas,” says Anne Bannock. Situated in picturesque Ngatimoti, artist Anne has made a studio retreat that caters to her creativity and to the public. “My studio is a converted cowshed which serves as my studio and gallery, and is open to the public in the summer.” The Advanced Diploma programme has been the best programme of study for Anne to follow, allowing her to discover new techniques and skills to add to her extensive creative repertoire. “Everyone I have met has been helpful, especially the tutors. I have met some students when I attended a block class and now I follow their progress via the magic of the workroom, TLC’s online student forum.” If you’d like to enquire about studying at The Learning Connexion School of Art and Creativity, call us on 0800 278 769, or email us at admissions@tlc.ac.nz.

Our exciting future T
he University of Canterbury is taking the opportunity created by the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 to revitalise its campus to create a learning environment that is innovative and engaging, and one that produces outstanding graduates in all disciplines. The next chapter of UC’s history will be one of renewal and transformation. The earthquakes have created huge challenges for our University, but this is also a time of great opportunity. The campus rebuild will see UC offer students some of the most modern facilities in New Zealand — reflecting new ways of teaching and learning. We are drawing on our history and bringing the strengths of a bicultural nation and multicultural society to what — and how — we teach. This, combined with our international partnerships, will ensure our staff and
students are best placed to take advantage of the connected world we live in. With support from the Government’s investment of up to $260 million, the University will embark on two major construction projects that will provide high quality research and teaching environments with state-of-the-art infrastructure which will encourage and promote excellence. The Rutherford Science and Innovation Centre, a $213 million development due for completion in 2017, will see the creation of an international centre of excellence in science that will be a cutting-edge centre for teaching, learning, research and innovation in science, and science and technology education. The College of Engineering Precinct, a $142-million development in the College of Engineering, will create a learning environment that will produce graduates with skills, hands-on experience and knowledge sought by industry.

any housing companies offer a package deal and therefore may size or position your heat pump incorrectly. It is best to talk to the experts to tailor a solution to best suit your individual requirements. This can be done from your architectural plans or from a free in-home consultation. Heat pumps are known to be one of the most energy efficient forms of heating available. In addition to being able to provide up to 4.9kW of energy for every 1kW used, there are the added benefits of cooling, dehumidifying and air filtration (great for people with allergies or asthma), benefits no other heating appliance can offer. Ducted and multi systems are becoming increasingly popular, providing climate controlled comfort throughout your home or workplace. We are also able to incorporate ventilation into ducted systems. Enviro Master Ltd are your air conditioning and heat pump specialists and have been servicing the Christchurch area for over 12 years now. Enviro Master supplies, installs and services all the leading brands including Panasonic, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi and Daikin. This means our team can show you which system and brand will best suit your needs in either your workplace or home. We are also able to repair any brand of heat pump. Servicing your heat pump is extremely important to ensure that it is working as effectively and efficiently as possible, resulting
in a healthy, hygienic heat pump, lower power bills and greater comfort. But beware, not all cleaning companies are equal. We are constantly hearing of people being charged huge amounts for servicing and all they are getting is a heat pump clean. We at Enviro Master are qualified engineers and therefore are able to fully test and diagnose any problems you may or may not be aware of with your heat pump. Also, as we are associated with all major brands, we are able to repair these under warranty if they are still within the warranty period. For a free in-home consultation, call Enviro Master on 366 0525 or visit our showroom at 41A Shakespeare Road, Waltham, Christchurch.

Church Corner
OPEN 7 DAYS
If you’re out Church Corner way and feeling peckish, call into 10a Yaldhurst Rd and experience some great value, great tasting, Middle Eastern influenced food. The Abrahim’s arrived in Christchurch from Egypt 23 years ago and during this time have owned and operated two well known takeaway restaurants - their current Church Corner Mediterranean Souvlakis Eat In/Takeaway and their former Edgeware store. Being influenced by a wide mix of civilisations, Egytian cuisine is diverse and it is many of these authentic dishes that the Abrahim’s offer on their new season menu. “When it comes to delicious authentic tasting exotic food we offer many modern menu options, you can rely on Church Corner Mediterranean Style Souvlaki to satisfy your taste buds!” said Mahmoud. “The whole idea behind take away food is that you don't have to do the dishes, and you get a delicious meal for a decent price. We're not trying to change the face of cuisine in Christchurch, we're just delivering satisfying, delicious food that fills your tummy and makes you smile!” And Church Corner Mediterranean Style Souvlaki delivers exactly that! All served with
